Whitby Hydrogen Village

It is hoped that around 2,000 homes in the Whitby area of the town will be the UK’s first ‘Hydrogen Village’. They will use 100% hydrogen for heating, cooking and hot water, instead of the natural gas they use now. Everything is on track for this to happen in 2025.

Cheshire Science Corridor

 

The Cheshire Science Corridor is a crescent that crosses the northern part of the Cheshire & Warrington sub-region linking together nationally and internationally significant research facilities and established science based businesses including Urenco, Sellafield Ltd, Rolls Royce, Essar, AstraZeneca and Waters Corporation to name a few. The area sits within and supports the growth aspirations of the Atlantic Gateway.

HS2

30,000 Jobs already supporting HS2s construction
1,000s jobs forecast to support building the Crewe to Manchester link
100 permanent skilled jobs to be created at HS2’s Crewe North Rolling stock depot

HS2 is creating jobs and benefiting the economy. Local opportunists include -  Bogies for HS2’s fleet of 54 high-speed trains being assembled and maintained at Alstom’s Crewe factory, supporting more local jobs.

Green skills

Every job of the future will need people with green skills that help to reduce the carbon footprint of businesses and ensure a sustainable future for everyone. Some jobs will change out of all recognition, examples include:

  • heating engineers will need to be able to fit heat pumps
  • electrical engineers will need to know how to install solar panels
  • people working in the manufacturing sector will need to understand how to reduce waste and improve energy efficiency
  • construction workers will need to understand more about retrofitting homes without damaging buildings
    farmers will need to understand about vertical farming
